 In Assembly, RNA-Seq, SNP

We frequently get asked by our clients how we’d approach looking at a sequencing quote. When you’re looking at 2 (or 3, or 7, or 10) different next-gen quotes you’d think it’d be easy. The one with the smallest number after the $ sign wins, right? Well, not so fast, there’s actually a lot more to it than that.

Look, there’s a lot of information on these quotes. Some of it you can gloss over for later (we always recommend reading a quote thoroughly before committing to a project), but some parts you need to pay attention to in order to make a decision based on something.

Here are a few of the signals we think you should be looking at:

  • The type of sequencing library used

Yes, there are more options than simply “DNA libraries” and “RNA libraries”.

  • Paired end vs. single end reads

Subtle difference in phrasing, huge difference in project pricing and success! Many times single end reads are used to keep costs low.

  • Read length

Using long reads all the time is like taking a limo everywhere, all the time. Sometimes it’s necessary, sometimes it’s nice, but it’s always expensive.

  • Analysis and visualization of data

How are you going to interpret all of those sequencing reads?

  • Turn-around time

Granted, some projects will take longer than others, but would you rather wait 4 weeks, or 4 months?

  • Post-project support

What?! You guys will work with me after my project is done? Yep.

Pay attention to the important parts and you’ll be able to make an informed decision.

We call our approach to project proposals at Cofactor “Good, Better, Best”. We want to provide our clients with an understanding of what they’re getting. After talking with clients about the important features of their project, we present three options with varying levels of service to accommodate different budgets and levels of service. So when you want to take a limo, we’ve got you covered, but we give you the whole range of options so you can decide what works best for you and your research goals. Get in touch. You won’t be disappointed.
